Swirling Waters

"Swirling Waters" inspired by photographs taken by Diane Kelsay and Bob Harvey, and by the many hours spent watching and photographing the birds of coastal and freshwater wetlands.

Techniques:

I started this quilt following a pattern (Twisted Bargello, Chris Timmins, Patchwork & Quilting), but quickly tired of sewing the rows before I was halfway finished. Hanging on my design wall for several weeks, I started to see the swirling colors of waterfalls with moss covered rocks that I’ve spent so much time photographing in Oregon . Then it hit me. Leave it as it is and start playing. I free-motion embroidered the crane and wetland and continued this theme with free-motion quilting. All along the cascade, I quilted designs of moving water and water plants.
